A1 ROCK OUT ON THIRD ALBUM:
In an exclusive chat with worldpop a1 have confirmed that their third album, the follow up to The a-List, will feature tracks that are heavily influenced by rock music. The lads' rock pop sound is a nod to the recent resurgence of both new and established guitar bands in the charts and is a move for a1 that mirrors that of their so-called rivals, Five.

Speaking to worldpop at the weekend Mark Read said, 'All the writing that we've been doing behind the scenes as of late has had more of a rock pop orientation, especially from Paul. He's probably the biggest rock fan I know.' Mark added that the band themselves were initially unsure as to whether the newly-crafted songs were suitable for an a1 album: 'We've even questioned whether we can get away with doing it cos it's really heavy stuff but it's really really good full on rock,' he insisted adding that Paul Marazzi's voice perfectly matches the rock sound. 'Paul actually sings the version that we have of it now and he sounds fantastic, as good as any other rock guru!'

The foursome, comprised of Paul, Mark along with Ben Adams and Christian Ingebrigtsen, have chosen the first track from the album as their next single but don't have a finished title yet. According to Mark it's a mid-tempo track with 'a very cool essence to it'. However the lads are keen not to label the single with one particular style. 'There's no label you can put on it because it's very different from anything else we've done,' stated Mark. Meanwhile, Paul and Christian described the song as borrowing influences from Prince, Lenny Kravitz, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Doors.

a1 also insisted that the 'war' between themselves and chart rivals Five has been hyped up by the press although they did reveal that comments made by members of Five in the past had annoyed them. 'We never had anything against them,' said Mark before elaborating, 'but when they almost personally start knocking the music there comes a time to when you have to say, 'Shut up!' cos it gets silly.'

'Events that have happened in our lives recently have made things like that seem really pathetic,' added Ben. 'There are much more important things in life than slating other people,' he continued. 'People should just concentrate on the music they're doing.'

In a final swipe at Five Paul laid down the songwriting gauntlet: 'If they do want any songs written for them they can always come to us!' he said. 'And in fact they have done and we've given them a few and we've heard they're recording them!' joked Ben.

Look out for a retaliation from Five soon!

a1 are appearing at this summer's Party In The Park on 8 July at London's Hyde Park and worldpop will there to catch all the news and gossip as it happens.

5IVE ATTACK A1!

April 24, 2001

Five headlined the pop night of MTV's Five Night Stand on Saturday, April 21 and the guys were in fine form, launching a tirade against the night's other performers, a1 and Hear'Say, exclusively to mtv.co.uk.
First in the line of fire, a1. "I'm not knocking them but they are crap," J Brown dead panned. "The videos are everybody's else's videos and the songs are everybody elses' songs, but the public goes for it all the time. It completely baffles me."

"I'm not blowing our own trumpet, but we came along and people hated us at first cos weren't conforming to the whole boy band thing and we carried on and we succeeded," he continued.

"Everyone tries to put rivalry there. But it's one of those things, you're good or your not," Scott Robinson offered, attempting to halt J's tirade. But J hadn't yet had his say on Hear'Say: "Nothing against them personally, if that's what they want to do and that's going to take them to where they wanna go. It's not my thing, but fair play to them." -- CL (MTV.co.uk)

A1 FIGHT BACK!
April 27, 2001

Boy band a1 have challenged Five to a live singing duel -- because they have had enough of their rivals having a pop at them.
The group have laid down the challenge after they were slated by J Five, who accused them of being "crap" and manufactured at Saturday's MTV Five Night Stand gig.

Band member Mark Read says, "I would really like to see Five on stage and us on stage, chuck a few instruments together and see what we can all really do.

"We would like to do it unplugged, take away the rap tracks we mime to and just have acoustics. Then we will soon see who's the most talented.

"Bands like Five are constantly slagging us off because they feel threatened by us. We don't feel threatened by them.

Hunky Christian Ingerbrigsten boasts, "We have found that people who are truly talented recognise talent in other artists.

"We are honoured to have the likes of Elton John, Lionel Ritchie and Craig David saying positive things about us and enjoying our music.

"Loads of talented musicians really like our music and like us. So we don't really care if someone like Five come along and slag us off. -- WENN
